YOKOTA TOKYO is pleased to present “LISTEN TO,” a solo exhibition by Susan Hefuna.
Hefuna’s second exhibition at our gallery features recent works and photographic prints from her practice, which spans diverse media. The works are composed of light, transparent materials like fabric and glass, combined with “words.”

Hefuna’s work provides an opportunity to listen intently to voices inaudible in everyday life.
Her works possess a delicate yet robust structure: several sheets of translucent paper stitched together with thread, or white dots forming networks on tapestries of black Egyptian cotton. At times, they become garments or bags that cling to the body, blending seamlessly into daily life.
This multi-layered structure, rooted in Hefuna’s sensibilities cultivated across the distinct cultural spheres of Egypt and Germany, symbolically represents the diversity of the societies and cultures we belong to.

The “unmediated words” frequently appearing in the works speak powerfully like a manifesto, yet they do not convey direct meaning. English and Arabic words, or symbol-like characters, are stitched onto fabric, overlapping like dots and lines, emerging as if breathing. In glass works, the shadows of engraved words sway, quietly speaking.
Like poetry or mantras, or the Zen concept of furyū monji (不立文字) — the Bhuddist revelation through direct experience—an attitude seeking truth beyond language—Hefuna’s works seem to quietly engage with a “state of being” beyond meaning and emotion.

Hefuna’s endeavors gaze into the “fissures” between cultures, societies, and overlapping layers, visualizing the communion between people and the world. Simultaneously, her works function like devices that awaken one’s senses as an experience.

“Listen to” is not merely the act of hearing sound. It is also an attitude for noticing voices within others, nature, and oneself—an act of reconnecting the world and the self.

“Listening” is sometimes said to be equivalent to “listening to silence.” In stillness, we become aware of sounds we had not noticed before and lend our ears… We hope you will engage in quiet contemplation, encounter works that are elegantly vivid, overflowing with color and vitality, and listen to the voice within.

YOKOTA TOKYO では、スーザン・ヘフナによる個展「LISTEN TO」を開催いたします。
弊廊では2 回目となる本展では、多様なメディアを横断するヘフナの制作より、布・ガラスな
どの軽やかで透明な素材と「言葉」によって構成された近作と写真先品を紹介します。

LISTEN TO

ヘフナの作品は、日常の中では感じることの出来ない声に耳を澄ます契機を与えてくれます。
彼女の作品は、何枚かの透過する紙が糸で縫い合わされ、あるいは黒いエジプト綿によるタペ
ストリーの上で白い点がネットワークを形成し、繊細ながらも強固な構造を持っています。それ
らは時に、衣服やバックとして身体に寄り添い、日常のなかへと溶け込みます。
この多層的な構造は、へフナがエジプトとドイツ異なる文化圏のもとで培った感覚に基づきな
がら、私たちが属する社会や文化の多様性を象徴的に表しています。

そして “time” “truth” “silence”

作品にしばしば登場する「無媒介的な言葉（unmediated words）」は、マニフェストのように力強
く語りかけながらも、直接的な意味を伝えるものではありません。英語やアラビア語の単語、あ
るいは記号のような文字が、点や線におり重なるように布に縫い込まれ、呼吸するように浮かび
上がります。またはガラスの作品では、刻まれた言葉の影が揺れ静かに語り掛けてきます。
それは詩やマントラのように、あるいは禅における「不立文字」——言葉を超えて真理を求め
る態度——意味や感情の先にある、「存在の状態」へと静かに働きかけりようです。

ヘフナの試みは、文化や社会、重なり合う層の「間（あいだ）」を見つめ、人と世界との交感を
可視化するものです。同時にそれは、体験として感覚を呼び覚ます装置のようでもあります。
“LISTEN TO＝耳を傾ける”とは、単に音を聴く行為にとどまりません。他者や自然、そして自ら
の内に潜む声に気づくための姿勢——世界と自己を結び直すための行為でもあります。
「聴く」とは、ときに「無音を聴く」ことに等しいとされます。沈黙の中で、私たちは気づかな
かった音に気づき、耳を傾ける……静かな思索と、エレガントに鮮やかに、色彩や生命感が溢れ
る作品に触れ、内にある声に耳を傾けていただければ幸いです。
